Cairo, September 14, 2023, In order to lessen the effects of the earthquake in Morocco and the flooding in Libya, the Arab League and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) urged the world community to act right away and offer all required humanitarian assistance. The request was made today during a joint press conference by Dr. Saleh Al-Tuwaijri, secretary-general of ARCO, and Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, assistant secretary-general of the Arab League and head of the social sector. They talked about the plight of the Arab people, particularly the earthquake in Morocco and the storm in Libya. According to Abu Ghazaleh, the Arab region is experiencing numerous humanitarian crises as a result of natural disasters, climate change, and armed conflicts, which have caused the deterioration of vital sectors in many of the region's countries. He emphasized the Arab League Secretariat's keenness to monitor the humanitarian situation in the member states.
She continued by saying that the Arab League is working through its different mechanisms, such as its affiliated organizations and specialized ministerial councils, to support both nations that are hosting refugees as well as all Arab governments that are experiencing terrible humanitarian conditions.
Al-Tuwaijri said that an urgent request for $9 million was made today to the Libyan Red Crescent to cover immediate demands essential to dealing with the effects of the catastrophic storm.
He continued by pointing out the exceptional solidarity displayed by Arab nations toward Libya and Morocco, as well as their readiness to offer immediate help. He complimented the Moroccan and Libyan Red Crescent organizations for their assistance to victims.
