Arab Parliament Speaker backs UN plea for Gaza ceasefire, preventing catastrophe

Cairo, December 07, 2023, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Adel bin Abdulrahman Al-Assoumi, has expressed his support for the plea made by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the declaration of a humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Al-Assoumi welcomed the initiative, considering it a crucial and necessary step to prevent what he referred to as a humanitarian catastrophe.

He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Arab Parliament's call for the United Nations to activate the "principle of union for peace" in the face of Security Council failures, particularly due to the use of veto power by the United States in favor of the occupying power.

Al-Assoumi urged the international community and world leaders to back the UN secretary-general's initiative and exert pressure on the council to fulfill its obligations and responsibilities. He highlighted the council's repeated failures since the Gaza war on October 7th and called for an immediate and urgent ceasefire in Gaza. The speaker's statement underscores the urgency of taking decisive action to address the humanitarian crisis in the region.
