Commonwealth Secretary-General appoints Saudi Professor Manahel Thabet as special envoy

Riyadh, Jan 26, 2024, Patricia Scotland, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, revealed on Thursday the appointment of Saudi Professor Manahel Thabet as her special envoy for science and technology. This selection comes in recognition of Professor Thabet's distinguished expertise, significant scientific achievements, and notable contributions in the fields of science and technology.

The Commonwealth of Nations, comprising 56 countries and a population exceeding 2.5 billion globally, is dedicated to fostering understanding among peoples regarding sustainable development goals, advanced technologies, coexistence, and peace. It stands as one of the most esteemed organizations in elite political and scientific circles.

Professor Manahel Thabet is entrusted with linking the member states of the Commonwealth of Nations to achieve sustainable development objectives. Her role involves facilitating communication and knowledge exchange, directing efforts to enhance scientific and technical research, advocating for best practices, utilizing technologies to address environmental challenges, promoting economic cooperation, and formulating a legal framework to bolster innovation. Additionally, she will support the capacity building of scientists and professionals within the member states.

A distinguished figure in Saudi Arabia, Professor Manahel holds several prominent positions. These include serving as an advisor to the president of King Abdul Azeez City for Science and Technology (KACST), president of the Economic Forum for Sustainable Development, founder and president of Consortium Consultants, a leading consultancy firm specializing in data banks, financial engineering, sustainable economic rewiring, and futurism. She also holds the positions of deputy director of the Institute for Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition at Imperial College, vice president of the World Intelligence Network (WIN), and vice-chancellor of the UK Gifted Academy. Professor Manahel's multifaceted expertise positions her as a key contributor to the advancement of science and technology on both national and international levels.
