New York, December 17, 2023, Dr. Abdullah bin Saleh Al-Muallem, the Director of the Health and Environmental Aid Department at the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), took part in an international pledging event for the FSO "Safer" oil tanker, orchestrated by the UN Development Program (UNDP) in New York. The session was graced by the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
During the event, Dr. Abdullah Al-Muallem addressed Saudi Arabia's deep concern regarding the "Safer" oil tanker and the potential environmental hazards it poses. Emphasizing the Kingdom's commitment to finding viable solutions for the replacement and maintenance of the tanker, he announced that Saudi Arabia has already contributed $18 million in two installments towards this cause.
Dr. Al-Muallem further conveyed the Kingdom's openness to the transfer of the tanker's contents to a new container, in line with the United Nations plan which has seen the successful transfer of 1.14 million barrels of crude oil.
Highlighting Saudi Arabia's proactive stance, Dr. Al-Muallem affirmed that the Kingdom will continue to closely monitor the collaborative efforts of the international team of experts and the legitimate Yemeni government in addressing this critical task. The commitment to overseeing the resolution of this issue underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to mitigating environmental risks and fostering regional stability.
