Flash floods and landslides in Vietnam's north kill 2, 8 missing

Hanoi, Vietnam, September 13, 2023, Vietnamese authorities said on Wednesday that flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the country's northern highland regions had killed two people and left eight others missing. The worst damage was in the Lien Minh Commune in Lao Cai province, where many locals' possessions and homes were washed away, according to the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control. The catastrophe took place Tuesday night. Because of the high floodwaters and wide-spread submerged areas, rescue workers said that it was challenging to access the disaster-stricken area.

Authorities in the area are looking for the missing.

The region is expected to experience additional floods in the days ahead, according to the Vietnam National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
