GASGI supports Riyadh's UN-GGIM endorsement as GEOEC Center of Excellence
Riyadh, August 8, 2023, The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GASGI) has expressed its admiration for the unanimous endorsement by the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) regarding Riyadh's selection as the host city for the headquarters of the UN Global Geospatial Ecosystem Center of Excellence.
A new center has been established to examine the future of geospatial data management in a modern and innovative manner. Its primary objective is to enhance global partnerships and equip countries around the world with the necessary tools and techniques to effectively utilize diverse geospatial data. The center aims to drive growth, foster innovation, and promote sustainable development through informed geospatial decision-making.
In a remarkable development, the United Nations (UN) has recently established its third center under the watchful eye of the UN-GGIM (United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management). This latest addition joins the esteemed ranks of the UN Global Geospatial Knowledge and Innovation Center in China and the UN Global Geodetic Center of Excellence in Germany.
In a remarkable display of regional leadership, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's Geospatial Information Center (GASGI) has been elected Chair of the Arab Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM). This prestigious appointment was made during the inaugural meeting of the Arab Committee, which took place in the vibrant city of Riyadh in February 2015. Building on their previous success, the Kingdom was once again re-elected as both Chair and Secretary of the UN-GGIM during the sixth meeting of the Arab Committee. This momentous event unfolded in the coastal city of Jeddah in February 2019, further solidifying Saudi Arabia's prominent role in the global geospatial information management arena.
