OIC Secretary General Taha works on food security strategic plan
Jeddah, October 02, 2023, Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has announced ongoing efforts to create a strategic plan aimed at ensuring food security within OIC member states. This plan will involve aligning with existing national strategies, harnessing OIC-wide resources, and mobilizing capacities for sustainable agricultural and rural development, ultimately enhancing food security.
Taha made this announcement during the opening of the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Food Security and Agricultural Development in Doha, Qatar. The conference's theme, "Towards Achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in the OIC Member States," underscores the importance of addressing food security challenges.
He highlighted that 23 OIC member states still rank among the 44 low-income nations worldwide grappling with food deficits. Taha emphasized that achieving Sustainable Development Goals, including eradicating poverty and hunger, necessitates a dedicated focus on developing agricultural and food supply chains, particularly in the least developed OIC countries.
Taha pointed out that OIC member states possess ample opportunities for collaboration in this critical sector. They are rich in arable land, resources, and technologies that can bolster self-sufficiency and foster mutual support among member states.
