Asian stocks mixed: Hang Seng down 0.4%, Shanghai Composite drops

Tokyo, January 04, 2024, Asian stocks showed a mixed performance on Thursday, as reported by the AP. Hong Kong's Hang Seng experienced a 0.4% decline, closing at 16,574.36, while the Shanghai Composite index dropped by 0.4% to 2,946.15. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 also saw a 0.4% decrease, settling at 7,494.10. South Korea's Kospi recorded an 0.8% decline, closing at 2,586.02. On a positive note, India's Sensex rose by 0.6%.

In the energy market, benchmark U.S. crude gained 69 cents, reaching $73.39 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude also increased by 57 cents, reaching $78.82 a barrel.

Regarding currency trading, the U.S. dollar strengthened against the Japanese yen, rising to 143.77 yen from 143.29 yen. The euro also showed a slight increase, costing $1.0931, up from $1.0922. The diverse movements in stocks, energy prices, and currencies indicate the complex dynamics influencing the Asian markets on this particular day.
