Historic Jeddah is seeing the restoration of its Rawasheen, with the traditional craft being passed to a new generation of artisans. These wooden balconies are a defining architectural feature of the area.
According to SPA, the project focuses on maintaining the authenticity of the Rawasheen by using traditional methods and materials. The initiative aims to ensure that the skills required for this intricate woodwork are not lost over time.
The training involves teaching young Saudis the techniques of carving and assembling the wooden lattices. This process helps in preserving the urban fabric of the historic district while empowering local craftsmen.
