Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve launches wildlife glossary

Rafha is the site of a new awareness initiative titled “Protected Area Glossary,” launched by the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve Development Authority.

According to SPA, the initiative aims to introduce community members to scientific and environmental terms related to wildlife and protected areas. It provides simplified, periodic explanations of concepts used in biodiversity conservation activities to expand environmental culture and raise awareness about protecting natural resources.

The program simplifies scientific concepts by linking them to practical examples from the reserve’s programs. This allows the public to learn about efforts regarding wildlife species protection, the preservation of natural habitats, and biodiversity sustainability goals.

In its first set of materials, the reserve introduced the term “Wildlife,” explaining it as all plant and animal living organisms, their natural habitats, and the environmental relationships between them. The reserve stated its focus is on protecting the natural environment and its resources by preserving vegetation, wildlife species, and biodiversity within its geographical area, alongside specialized programs for the propagation and protection of endangered species.

The initiative also explained “Reintroduction,” which refers to returning living organisms to their natural habitats after a long absence or local extinction. The reserve noted success in reintroducing several wildlife species, including the Houbara, Arabian Oryx, Arabian Gazelle, Reem Gazelle, and Ostrich, as evidence of the effectiveness of its propagation and habitat restoration programs.

What is the purpose of the Protected Area Glossary initiative? The initiative launched by the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve Development Authority aims to familiarize the community with scientific and environmental terms related to wildlife. It achieves this by providing simplified, periodic explanations of concepts used in biodiversity conservation to help expand environmental culture and increase awareness regarding the importance of protecting natural resources.

How does the reserve explain the concept of wildlife? Within the framework of the Protected Area Glossary, the reserve defines wildlife as encompassing all plant and animal living organisms. This definition includes their natural habitats as well as the environmental relationships that exist between these various organisms.

What is reintroduction and which species have been involved? Reintroduction is defined as the process of returning living organisms to their natural habitats following a local extinction or a long-term absence. The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve has successfully applied this to several species, specifically the Arabian Oryx, Arabian Gazelle, Reem Gazelle, Houbara, and Ostrich.
